Toronto shooting leaves one dead, 2 injured

A man has been shot dead and two others injured in what police say is a gang-related incident at a nearby apartment complex in Vaughan, a large suburb in the eastern part of Toronto.

Toronto Police Sgt. Darcy Lefebvre told CNN on Thursday that a 32-year-old man has been identified as the victim of the shooting and that the incident appears to be a “criminal matter.”

“We don’t have any reason to believe this is any kind of random event,” he said.

“This is certainly not a response to any speech or any criminal activity.”

Lefebvre said the shooting happened at 10:17 p.m. (11:17 p.m. ET) on Wednesday and was first reported by the Eaton Centre mall.

He said a 50-year-old man and a 20-year-old man were injured when gunfire was fired on their vehicle at the unit complex and that the third victim, an 18-year-old man, was shot inside the complex.

All three victims were rushed to hospital with serious injuries and were listed in stable condition Thursday morning, a spokeswoman for Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre told CNN.

The nearby Eaton Centre, which was hit with a bomb threat earlier this week, remained open Thursday, said Toronto Police Const. David Hopkinson.

He said three people were in custody and more arrests are expected as police continue their investigation.

CNN’s Carma Hassan contributed to this report.
