After 18 months of research and analysis, Hall of Fame Manager Tony La Russa announced today he has selected 23 finalists for consideration in the voting of the Baseball Writers Association of America for the Baseball Hall of Fame Class of 2021.
“I had a feeling of anxiety upon the possibility of this. Eighteen months is a long time to be sequestered.”
La Russa acknowledges the thought of this year’s ballot “strained my emotions.” He explained: “I had a feeling of anxiety upon the possibility of this. Eighteen months is a long time to be sequestered.” But when he started putting the ballot together, he quickly made his decision: he would rank the names alphabetically.
Included in the initial 23 names will be several candidates who did not make the cut a year ago, while the players who did make the cut but did not receive the required 75% voting required by the BBWAA were left off the ballot. As a result, names such as Will Clark, among the 75% bonus voters, and Tommy John are again considered deserving. “Although I didn’t go by the seventy-five percent threshold, I will not vote this way next year,” La Russa said.
In the ballot announcement, La Russa listed the thoughts that made his initial choices in his categories of Coaches, Writers, and Players.
